HERACLEUM
The Heracleum is no ordinary lamp. This LED design lamp is the work of Dutch designer Bertjan Pot. For this iconic design, the designer experimented with the possibilities of LED lighting. The result is a large amount of LED lights in the shape of a branch structure, which light up leaf-shaped lenses. This makes the design lamp reminiscent of the flower of the same name; the Heracleum, more popularly known as the hogweed.
Demand
Because a lot of soldering is required for this design lamp, Bertjan Pot teamed up with Marcel Wanders, founder and creative director of Dutch design label Moooi. Together, the parties came up with the idea of applying Marcel Wanders’ special Electrosandwich studio: a technique of two layers of insulation and conductivity coated onto the structure. The conductive layer powers the LED lamps.
From this solution, the parties went in search of a partner to apply the insulating coating. This is how they ended up with Kersten coating technology.
Approach
The structure of the design therefore consists of various layers, of which the insulating layer is applied by Kersten coating technology in Brummen. We use the natural product Rilsan® for this purpose. We apply this coating by electrostatic powder spraying. Afterwards, we check the density of the protective layer with a test voltage of 9 volts per μm. In this way, we guarantee an optimal result.
Of course, we always work very precisely, but something as fragile as a lamp naturally requires complete craftsmanship. Process control is even more essential for light components. Fortunately, we have years of experience in this!
Result
The result is an iconic LED lamp that – fitted with an insulating coating – does not conduct electricity with the right layer thickness.
